• Here are 3 solutions for fighting spam:

    Akismet
    Get the plugin: https://akismet.com
Signup at https://wordpress.com for your API key.
( You do not need a blog there, just sign up)
    Help here: https://wordpress.com/api-keys/

    Bad-behavior
    Get the plugin: https://www.ioerror.us/software/bad-behavior/
    Does NOT work at godaddy

    Spam Karma 2
    Get the plugin: https://unknowngenius.com/blog/wordpress/spam-karma/

Do NOT ask ‘Which is best because….’ or ‘Which one do you suggest I get’ or any variation of that – they are ALL good and yes, they can all be used together.

SK2 will run all existing comments through it’s filters to catch spam already there.

CJD Spam Nuke from https://chrisjdavis.org/category/wp-hacks will also ID and let you remove spam with one click

Captcha (where you have to type words in to verify you are a human) are NOT effective. You will still get spammed. So use one of the above.

You may also see little ‘Donate’ buttons on the above sites. As their work was given freely and saves you masses of time (do you want to delete spam by hand every morning?), saying Thanks by dropping a tip into their jar would be appreciated I’m sure.

Uh oh… there seems to be a new spamming issue. Spammers are now using the registration form in WordPress to send spam to people. One of our client’s wordpress installation is getting hit hard. The spammer inserts a message like “Buy Cialis” in the username and then puts in the recipient’ss email address. Of course, they use a random username every time.

registration – that’s nothing new… have your client disable user registrations if it’s that much of a hassle – they’re really not THAT necessary.

Askimet is a great plugin as a spam killer. It can learn from last time action you did. So you can ease your mind on spam and no longer worry about any spam comment. thanks again for this great feature.

The Bad Behavior plugin may help with this sort of thing as well, because it’s checking the request on every page load, not just for comments and such. It doesn’t block every spammer request, but it does get quite a lot of them.

Is there a way I can block the emails of the spammers? So that their comments will not be posted in my database…

Did you read the whole thread or are you just posting? This whole topic is about how to stop spam: this is the good part.
The bad part? – You have to read it.

In short, if you configure Akismet & Bad Behavior plugins. All your problems will get sort.

    Hi,

another WP installation got hit today. I still don’t get how commentspam can happen if

    – comments are turned off
    – trackbacks and pings are off

edit each post and make sure both ‘allow comments’ and ‘allow pings’ are unchecked.

    Hi charle97,

that’s what I was saying, ALL comments are off, ALL pingbacks are off, trackbacks are off, comments are NOT allowed AT ALL – and still I get spam on this blog.

Spammers seem to be reverting back to the old fashioned way, or they created a space age machine thats able to comprehend what I wrote, come up with a legitimate comment that relates to the post and even alludes to things I said, and made it seem like a human was typing it.

I’ve been using SK2/BB/Akismet for a while and still get a few occasional spams (1-2/day) that sound like a human typed them due to the context of the comment in relation to the post and has links to spam sites. Most of these IP addresses all seem to lead back to Canada.

    Hi ryanduff,

what bugs me in this is, that none of the posts allow either comments or pingbacks, comments are turned off on all counts in the options menu, including a selection of “only registered users” if comments were allowed, trackbacks are off as well, and STILL those spams appear.

They should not. If a function is off on all counts, it ought to be impossible to use it at all. And it bugs me that this still happens. And no, no, NO – these are no trackbacks. They are absolutely normal comments. I’m capable of telling the difference.

Which leads me to the conclusion that if you turn comments off (both in individual posts AND as an option), you really only manipulate the outer html interface and NOT the function per se. And this – turn it as you want to – IS a severe security problem and a very real bug.

I also set up Textpattern, Sapid and Serendipity blogs for people and if you turn off comments there, they are turned off. Really – truly – completely: OFF.

Please be advised that (at least in WP 2.0.3, but probably older versions too), the option “Blacklist comments from open and insecure proxies.” (‘Options’ -> ‘Discussion’) doesn’t work any more, as the RBL which is being tested, has ceased to exist: https://lists.blitzed.org/pipermail/opm-announce/2006q2.txt

To switch to another (working) RBL, do this:
    – edit wp-includes/functions-post.php
    – find the text: opm.blitzed.org
    – replace with: sbl-xbl.spamhaus.org
(do not touch the dots before and after the text)

    Hello, i’am a newbie here ??
So, here is my problem, i have a wordpress blog on my site and i’am horribly tired to remove tones of spam from my blog member area. Comments appered only after moderation process, but how can i protect against every day looking and removing spam?

Hi armas. Did you read the very first post in this very long thread?
