• Here are 3 solutions for fighting spam:

    Akismet
    Get the plugin: https://akismet.com
Signup at https://wordpress.com for your API key.
( You do not need a blog there, just sign up)
    Help here: https://wordpress.com/api-keys/

    Bad-behavior
    Get the plugin: https://www.ioerror.us/software/bad-behavior/
    Does NOT work at godaddy

    Spam Karma 2
    Get the plugin: https://unknowngenius.com/blog/wordpress/spam-karma/

Do NOT ask ‘Which is best because….’ or ‘Which one do you suggest I get’ or any variation of that – they are ALL good and yes, they can all be used together.

SK2 will run all existing comments through it’s filters to catch spam already there.

CJD Spam Nuke from https://chrisjdavis.org/category/wp-hacks will also ID and let you remove spam with one click

Captcha (where you have to type words in to verify you are a human) are NOT effective. You will still get spammed. So use one of the above.

You may also see little ‘Donate’ buttons on the above sites. As their work was given freely and saves you masses of time (do you want to delete spam by hand every morning?), saying Thanks by dropping a tip into their jar would be appreciated I’m sure.

  • Hi HandySolo, I’ve red the very first post, but what particularly you call “very long thread”? This 4 pages long thread?

Yes. This thread. First post, page 1.

I’ve red 1-st page closely, but what specifically tool should i use?

    Akismet or Spam Karma 2

Either of those with Bad Behavior.

All links are in the first post of this thread.

Thanx a lot HandySolo for your assistance. And what combination of tools is yours?

I received a API key for aksomet, but when entering it in the aksimet plugin it keeps telling me its not valid.
    I use aksimet 1.15

Since i used Akismet i have not a single spam in the comments!

I would like to add one more tool I’ve found very useful. I run this with Akismet, SK2 and Bad Behavior.

    Comment Spam Plugin 1.1:
    https://freepressblog.org/wordpress-plugins/comment-spam-plugin/

Hi. I blog at a website, though I’m not the webmaster/administrator.

I’m trying to cope with spam. I think the best way is to disallow comments for each blog posts, a couple days after the blog post is written.

I therefore want to disallow comments for about a year’s worth of blog posts. Can I do this for the blog posts that I’ve written, without painstakingly going to each old blog post and disallowing comments one blog post at a time??? This would take me weeks!

    my problem is not that i’m getting spam, but that all legitimate comments from people other than myself are getting marked as spam. for a while i thought no one liked me and so they weren’t visiting my sight, but then i looked in the database today and found a whole bunch of comments i’d never seen and they were all marked as spam. below are my settings;

    Usual settings for an article:
    * Attempt to notify any Weblogs linked to from the article (slows down posting.)UNCHECKED
    * Allow link notifications from other Weblogs (pingbacks and trackbacks.)CHECKED
    * Allow people to post comments on the article CHECKED

    E-mail me whenever:
    * Anyone posts a comment CHECKED
    * A comment is held for moderation CHECKED

    Before a comment appears:
    * An administrator must approve the comment (regardless of any matches below) UNCHECKED
    * Comment author must fill out name and e-mail CHECKED
    * Comment author must have a previously approved comment CHECKED

    Can anyone help?

    I run Akismet, and Bad Behavior(All latest version). But whenever I activate SK2, I gets error in comment form, the latest error is as quoted under;

Warning: Cannot modify header information – headers already sent by (output started at /home/rok/public_html/blog/wp-content/plugins/SK2/sk2_second_chance.php:2) in /home/rok/public_html/blog/wp-content/plugins/Bad-Behavior/bad-behavior/screener.inc.php on line 8

Here is another Spam fighting plug-in:

    https://www.deliciousdays.com/smp-plugin

Rok, make sure neither file has a blank space at the end of it or at the start. That is normally the cause.

And about SK2…. Check the SK2 Logs tab to see what is causing the comments to be flagged as spam.

Jmas, please list all/any anti-spam plug-in(s) you are running on your blog.

    Ferrylodge, check out this plug-in:

    https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Plugins/Auto_shutoff_comments

    “Autoclose comments after 90 days.”

MHC, I believe this is the plug-in you mentioned. ??

    Or:

    https://frenchfragfactory.net/ozh/archives/2005/02/02/wordpress-plugin-auto-moderate-comments/

“Auto moderate comments when a post is older than XX days”

Dutchfalcon and Nurice, contact tech support here:

    https://akismet.com/contact/

Christiaan, WP-Gatekeeper is weak since the spammer can get your list of questions in basically no time. Since I doubt you have more than 100 questions, if that many. ??

Jabesse, thanks for the info about blocking proxies.

Saywhaaa, that does seem very odd. I would redownload wordpress and reinstall, just to be safe. Also, delete your database. So start over. Should not be an issue since you said you just created it. Even though, back up everything first.

war59312 – I have no blank space at the end of the file. But I will work on your advice and will get back, once it has been done.

    Rok, good luck buddy!

    Here is another new plug-in:

    https://www.justinshattuck.com/bannage/

    # Ban comments by:

    1. URI
    2. Username
    3. Email Address
    4. IP Address
