specific version .tar.gz downloads instead of latest?

  • Are specific version downloads available somewhere? All I can find right now on the web site is “latest.tar.gz” which is nice for humans but bad for scripts or automated build systems.
    I’ve worked up a package for the NetBSD package system (https://www.pkgsrc.org) and it’s important to be able to grab a specific version of the distribution file to be sure it’s genuine and to make sure that any changes to the packing lists in new versions get updated.

    Maybe you could make them downloadable from something like ‘https://www.ads-software.com/wordpress-1.5.1.tar.gz’ as well as from ‘latest.tar.gz’?

    Too bad the archives only go up to December 2004, and doesn’t include 1.5 or 1.5.1. ??
    If it did, that’d be the right place ??

    Why not name the .tar.gz on the main download page with the version number as well? For people who are really attached to latest.tar.gz, just make that a symlink to the latest version.

    I find latest.tar.gz to be annoying because whenever I download with wget I have to add something like “-O wordpress-1.5.2.tar.gz” to the command-line so that I can remember what the heck it is that I downloaded.

    Yes, this is something that I would also like. Upgrading is difficult because I first have to move the previous latest.tar.gz file out of the way, and rename the previously extracted wordpress directory to something else, then I can download the new latest.tar.gz and extract the new wordpress directory.

    It would be much friendlier if WordPress could be downloaded like every other piece of open source software out there. That is, a wordpress-1.5.2.tar.gz file would contain a wordpress-1.5.2 directory.

    Hey, looks like https://static.www.ads-software.com/archive/ now includes current releases.
    I found 2.0.1 there just now.

    Apparently those are just an afterthought, as there are no tarballs there for 2.0.2.

    I guess I’ll give up on asking for a standard file naming scheme for packages.
