Specify group with registration / signup checkbox

I would like to specify the MailChimp group that someone is subscribed to if they join using the Registration form checkbox.
I did see the link in the FAQs for how to use a filter to specify groupings through the comment form signup. (https://gist.github.com/dannyvankooten/7120559)
However, I noticed folks weren’t able to get that to work on the comment form AND I was hoping to do this on the registration form.
Anyone have luck with this?
