  • “Stopped working” for me meant that when it was first installed it worked flawlessly. Several days later the pop-up box was empty. Nothing was changed on my end or the backend, so I don’t know. Good idea though, maybe needs a tad of refinement.

Please note that a new version of the plugin was released yesterday that adds, among other things:

    * An administration page within the WordPress Options framework for ease of configuration and adding words to the personal dictionary,
    * an attempt at auto-detecting the aspell executable (for those of you with no shell access),
    * Compatibility with the WordPress Plugin Manager for One-Click installs and automatic update availability.

To acquire, I’d seriously recommend going through the aforementioned Plugin Manager. Feel free to start here.

    Thanks.

I apologize for not responding eragle… stupid me didn’t realize there was a second page. ??

Thank you again for this plugin !

For other users, I had to make the ‘spell-plugin’ dir 777 due to the way my server works. ymmv.

I get a problem (having installed it according to the instructions) when I try to visit the set up page for the first time.

I get a completely blank page. And the plugin doesn’t seem to be working yet. ??

    Any ideas
    Cheers

David, when you go to the Options page do you see a sub-menu for “Spell Checker”?

HI. I’m afraid I’m a newbie Word Press user. I have installed the Spelling Checker but all I get is a blank checker box. In the FAQs it says I should “get a shell to your host and perform a a€?which aspella€?.” I’m afraid I don’t understand. What is a “shell” to my host? Many thanks if you can help.

ColdForged: err.. yeah I suppose I should have thought of that.
been there, done that – all seemed to look like it knew what it was talking about.

Now there is a check spelling button on the post writing page, but the popup window is a little pear shaped:

Top frame has a copy of the text of my post
    Bottom frame says:
    Not Found
The requested URL /controls.php was not found on this server.

And it’s true there is no controls.php in the root. but there is one in /wp-content/spell-pluggin

    Any help appreciated

I installed the plugin but I get blank screen when pressing the spellign button. My ISP told me that executables are banned on the server
They said that I can onbly run it as php module – could this be the problem?

David, what browser is this on? The fact that it’s reporting the error as if controls.php is at the root instead of being relative to the loaded page is worrying.

    Yes turtey that sounds likely.

Bad luck – I quite liked the plugin
Are there any ways to overcome the problem?

if you use Firefox, use the Spellbound extension

    https://spellbound.sourceforge.net/

Then you just highlight text, right-click and tell it to check spelling on any text-box, anywhere…

now that I think about it, if anyone is handy with the Firefox extensions, maybe it is possible to adapt its structure to a WP plugin if people do not want to use Firefox….

    @philpeeps
Well I can as well use the built-in dictionary of open office (or any text redactor) and just copy-paste the text, but I preffer to have the freedom of checking my spelling from anywhere.
I hope there will be a simple solution to help all of us illiterates ??

Not really as the plugin currently stands. It would be possible to create a version for those with the PHP pspell library built-in, but frankly as far as I can tell by demand and comments — which of course may very well be a false indicator — the number of hosts that have pspell support are even fewer than the number of hosts that disallow all executables.
