Splitting posts that are on one page

start by setting the ‘posts per page’ number to 1 from within:
dashboard – settings – reading – blog pages show at most [ ] posts

then check if your currently used theme does automatically show some ‘next’ posts links;
and consider to use a plugin to show page link nubers 1,2,3 for the pagination; https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/search.php?q=pagination

I have done that, cannot upload the widget. Still cannot split posts. Using the twenty twelve theme. Really frustrated and confused.

what happens, or what is the error message when you try to upload the plugin for example via ‘admin – plugins – add new’?
