Sports Draft Application with interactivity

  • Hi All,

    I’m oompletely new to WordPress but in a previous life I was a Programmer for a company using Flash and Lingo but it’s been a few years and now that I can no longer work I have a large goodwill project I’d like to develop but to begin I’d like to learn by developing an app for Managers of sports teams to conduct an entry draft. I know I can do it in Flash but I really want to learn WordPress and this might be a difficult enough task to give me the knowledge I need for the larger project while helping out a local league.

    Basically what I want to do is have an online app that displays the draft results and displays the players still available. The team GMs will likely not all be able to attend so I’d like to allow them the option of attending the draft online so they would have to specify their team and basically click the player they want and submit it to the league commissioner.

    Is this possible with WordPress or am I biting off way more than I can chew as a newbie. I have all the time I need to do this but where I’m new, but I don’t want to get into this if the draft app can’t be done. I still want to learn WordPress so I’ll come up withsomething else but I would like to help this league by developing this app if possible.

    Any thoughts, comments, or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  • In WordPress, they’re called plugins – not “apps”. ??

    You might want to have a look at Writing_a_Plugin.

    Thanks ESMI, I appreciate your quick reply, I’ll look at Writing_a_Plugin.

    As I said, I’m new to WordPress so I apologize for the faux pas. hehe

    Is this something that can be done with WordPress do you feel?

    In theory, it’s possible if you also made use of WordPress’ Roles_and_Capabilities but it’s going to need some fairly extensive understanding of how WordPress works, so do be prepared for a pretty steep learning curve.

    You might find some of the existing team plugins useful. As they are all released under GPL, you could re-use some of their code etc.

    Awesome! Thanks again, sincerely, for your replies ESMI. Maybe I’ll break it down page by page and go from there rather than get overwhelmed by what I have to learn. Look forward to seeing what WordPress can do though.

    If you do hit a stumbling block and it’s code-related, I’d suggest asking for help in the Hacks forum. Quite a few plugin developers and other coders hang out in there and it’s somewhat quieter than this one.
