Similar to another issue already posted on this forum, my client did a Square sync with ‘Update existing products during import‘ option ticked and this overwrites the existing categories to ‘Unauthorized’. The Sync log shows all affected products with an alert that states “Items with variable pricing cannot be imported” (Screenshot: https://snipboard.io/nLsTI6.jpg).
Note: if you do not ticked this option the sync will leave the existing categories alone as expected.
I have restored the website several times and tried the sync with both v4.6.2 and 4.6.3 versions of the Square plugin and it still creates the same issue.
The website currently does not currently show the issue as I have restored it so that the products show correctly until a solution is found.
    Any help is appreciated.
    Many thanks.

    Hi @robnevyn

Thank you for reaching out — we’re happy to help!

Square sync setting all sync’d products categories to unauthorized

From what I gather, with the latest two releases of WooCommerce Square (4.6.2 and 4.6.3) sync’d products will be assigned the Uncategorized category, when previous to these two releases everything was working as expected — always with Square as SOR. Am I getting this?

Just to clarify, did you already have a chance to test with a category different than Uncategorized set as default, and rearranging the categories in the screen at wp-admin > Products > Categories, and see if the issue persists, or otherwise?

Sidenote: the most recent entry in the plugin’s changelog is from 2.2.1 (released on 2020.09.11) and I cannot seem to be able to surface any results on GitHub either.

We look forward to your response. In the meantime, please let us know if you have any further questions or concerns.

Correct, prior to this everything was working as it should for 8 or so months.

I have just completed another test using another category called artwork and set it as default. Did another sync and it has the same issue, all existing products (or new products added) are now sync’d with the default category. So whatever the default is, the products will show that default category instead of the correct category as set in the Square account.
The original correct product categories are still listed in the ‘Products >> Categories’ section but have no products assigned to them, they are all appearing on the default category after the sync.

Note: that this issue is affecting about 95% of the products, not every product. A few categories remain correct however they do not display any products when viewed by those few categories.

    Hi @robnevyn,

Thank you for the additional details and for helping with testing. We’ve got a couple of other reports about this, so our developers are looking into it. I made a note with your case, too, so as soon as we have a fix, we’ll let you know so you can update and test again!

As I understand, you’ve rolled back and are currently on 4.6.1, which works fine, correct?

    Cheers!

I have not gone back to v4.6.1 as this was released 2024-04-10 and I have done too much on the site to rollback that far. I could try and manually change the Square plugin version however the database will not match and I have no idea what happens with that.

    Hello robnevyn

    Thank you for your reply.

I understand you do not want to roll back to version 4.6.1 as it is too risky.
In that case, I suggest creating a staging site and trying this on that site.

Many web hosts provide the Staging Site feature.
Ask your web host to confirm this.
Otherwise, you can use the WP Staging plugin to create a staging site.

You can view the progress of the bug report here.

    I hope this helps. ??

For what it’s worth, I tried the Square Sync again after updating plugins to WooCommerce 9.0.2 and WooCommerce Square 4.7.0 and the exact same issue still persists.

    Hi @robnevyn,

Thank you so much for testing and confirming the issue persists on 4.7.0, our developers haven’t addressed this one yet, you can follow the github thread for more details here: https://github.com/woocommerce/woocommerce-square/issues/156.

I’m updating it with the knowledge you just shared, by the way, so thanks!
