    HI

    I need some clarification.

I had a question on requirements for SSL Certificates for Woocommerce sites and standard sites. People have differing opinions.

I always use SSL for client sites with mainly shopping carts etc.

What if a client is only requiring a Product Catalogue but using Woocomerce as backend ? So therefore never any ‘Add to Cart” maybe only a ‘Request a Quote’ instead. Is SSL required really ? Customers are NOT required to login to the site as it is not a shopping cart.

They would only need to send a Form or use a Contact Form only …

And what is your opinion on SSL requirements on smaller sites that are only simple Worpdress sites with 2-5 pages, I assume SSL not required for this.

Most normal small websites don’t use SSL.

I see Google are changing things again for websites not showing a https: SSL certificate as not secure.

    Thanks
    Kristin

  • The fact that browsers like Chrome will be warning that a site has no SSL certificate by effectively shouting THIS SITE IS NOT SECURE will undoubtedly put people off visiting sites without one!

If there’e a contact form involved then the user will have the assumption that their personal details are being sent to the site – even if it is just name and email address.

Personally, I would always use one if I can – obviously if you’re on a shared host it may not be possible though I use Digital Ocean and OVH and use Lets Encrypt as standard – even if the site is a static single page!

    HI

Thanks for that. I am not familiar with https://letsencrypt.org/

Do you mean this is a free SSL or free for certain purposes for static sites ?

    And for more complex

And only certain hosts support this ?

    Thanks
    Kristin

It’s free for anyone to use for any type of site!

To install it you need root access to the server so if you’re on a shared host then they would need to do all the setup – many already offer it as standard – but a lot will want to sell you an alternative!

I’d recommend using an SSL certificate on every site these days. Yes, it’s even more important for sites where information is transmitted, such as a contact form or other address details. Using that SSL certificate ensures that information between the user and the site is encrypted, which means all information is private.

Also, as @seank123 mentioned, Google’s upcoming changes to Chrome mean that any site without an SSL certificate (even if it’s not an e-commerce site) will show as This site is not secure! Getting ahead of that is a great idea.

    I hope that helps!

Thanks @seank123 and Hannah for your comments.

    That helped clear it up.

I wasn’t even aware there was a free SSL option at all.

I will check with my hosts about this.

When I talk to the hosts about this do I reference to https://letsencrypt.org/ or just call it a free SSL option ?

    Thanks
    Kristin

I’d mention Lets Encrypt by name – it’s something all hosts should be aware of!
