TaxCloud experienced down SSL since Friday 12-4-20 – and the SSL for the simplesalestax.com site is still down.

On my site, everytime I have SST activated (it’s currently deactivated so sales can go through cleanly), I get this error on my cart page: Failed to calculate sales tax: cURL error 60: SSL certificate problem: certificate has expired (see https://curl.haxx.se/libcurl/c/libcurl-errors.html)

Most of the support routes I’ve gone, direct to TaxCloud, keep treating me like everything is fine, but I’m still getting this SSL-related cURL error when trying to use SST. HELP!

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

    These are two separate issues.

    SSL for simplesalestax.com down

I am well aware and TaxCloud has also been aware for nearly a month now. Thus far they have refused to renew the cert or migrate the site to a new environment where they have the control to do that (they lost access to the current one). I haven’t operated this site for nearly 4 years so unfortunately there’s nothing I can do.

Sounds like TaxCloud needs to renew the certs for their backend services as well. If the problem continues, reach out to their support at [email protected] or call them. Nothing I can do on my end to help with this either.

Sorry I can’t be of more help here.

    Hey Brett,

Thanks for your reply. Strange set of he-said she-saids I’m trapped in here! Not meaning to blame you, just feels odd that there’s not a sense of urgency around getting this fixed.

I understand that the SST website SSL cert has been down a while. Since it’s been so long but the plugin errors are new, I guess this is not the SSL that is the issue. (Though it’s crazy that this remains down, hard way to make sales!)

For the second bit … they’ve renewed some certs. They also moved some api services, I believe: see https://status.taxcloud.net/ and the message “We have migrated to an Azure App Service and the redirect to taxcloud.asmx is different. If you are having issues please use asmx.taxcloud.com/1.0/?wsdl asmx,taxcloud.net/1.0/?wsdl”.

I’m sorta guessing that the plugin needs to be updated to point to these new api locations? What do you think?

    Thanks for your help.

This isn’t a he-said, she-said. This is just the reality. TaxCloud has owned and operated that site for 4 years and they are responsible for fixing it. I don’t have the access needed to renew the SSL certificate and if I did you better believe I’d do it in a heartbeat. It’s getting pretty old having to explain to customers that TaxCloud is already aware of this problem and have yet to fix it.

The SSL errors from the TaxCloud.com backend services are a separate matter, and I think the folks at TaxCloud may have broken things when trying to fix the SST.com certificate. In any case, they are also aware of this and should fix it soon (they’re a little less lax about critical services going down than the old SST site). Definitely follow up with TaxCloud if that error isn’t resolved soon.
