• Hi, I am starting from scratch – very basic understanding of HTML/XML, more of a driver than a mechanic when it comes to blogging.

I made all the edits in the wp-config.php file, saved it, and FTP’d it all to my domain. But when I put /wp-admin/install.php in my browser I get this error –

    404 File not found
Firefox can’t find the file at /Users/(my name)/Downloads/wordpress/wp-admin/install.php.
    * Check the file name for capitalization or other typing errors.
    * Check to see if the file was moved, renamed or deleted.

I did search for typing errors, found one, corrected it, uploaded the new version, and experienced the same problem. A co-worker suggested I download MAMP to make a local server but is this necessary?

Are there any common noob mistakes when installing WordPress that I should know about? Is there anyone who can help me figure this out?

    Neal

  • Just a hint, you need a web server to make WordPress working.
let that be local or remote.

LAMP for Linux OS, MAMP for MAC, or WAMP for Windows

OK, thanks for confirming that. It would help if that was in the 5 minute install. ??

NealTaflinger, I still don’t know on which OS you’re on, but if your answer is Windows I can pretty much assure you that WAMP is usually less than five minutes install, pretty straightforward. Give it a shot, it’s worthy.

Mac OS X. I installed MAMP and a friend is going to walk me through it tomorrow. Thanks,
