• On one of my websites, I want to start over. Completely. I plan to remove the current content (all the posts, categories, etc.) and totally change the theme of the site.

For a variety of reasons, the site has become slow and clunky. I’m guessing there are too many plugins, as well as too many themes that I’ve added to my wp-content/themes folder. I have probably been too lazy in updating wordpress and plugins too.

So here’s my question: would it be better/easier for me to leave the wordpress structure intact and delete the posts, themes, etc. within that, or would it be better for me to completely delete wordpress, then reinstall a fresh copy of wordpress?

  • If you’re starting fresh again, do a complete delete-everything and re-install. That way you know exactly what you’re starting with and you can do what you want to from that known clean starting point.

Deleting files and even the database might or might not be enough. I once found files even behind my “root” that a cache plugin had somehow put there, and my host “nuked” (reset) my entire account so I could have a truly-fresh re-start.

Thanks guys! I was thinking I wanted to delete and reinstall, but not sure – glad to know I was thinking the right way!

Leejosepho – thanks for that tip!
