If you’re just building a local test site, https://localwp.com is a must easier way to go.

Yeah thanks. but not interested. How do I create a user in mariadb? I want to do my website on my computer. I have tried using several different hosting sites and got quite aggravated with trying to get started on these sites, so I am doing it from my computer.

I strongly advise against running a public website on your personal computer. Should the site get hacked, the hacker is now (1) on your personal computer and (2) inside your network, potentially with access to other devices there.

I’ve never used mamp/wamp/xamp. I host my personal sites on Linux machines and have used localwp for quick tests.

There seem to be some decent guides here: https://duckduckgo.com/?q=installing+wordpress+on+wamp&ia=web

I have been working with computers for about 50 years. I think I can battle harden my website. Word press is something new for me. So I have a lot of questions to get my site up and running. I gave up on web hosting companies as they claim setting up a web site is suppose to be quick and easy. I found it to be quite the opposite. So I gave up trying to make one work for me. Also they want a years worth of money to get started on these sites. Right now I am broke until the first of next month.

Once you have WAMP installed and configured following the guide at https://make.www.ads-software.com/core/handbook/tutorials/installing-wordpress-locally/wampserver/ (mariadb is not a part of that guide, for example), you install WordPress following the steps at https://make.www.ads-software.com/core/handbook/tutorials/installing-wordpress-locally/from-zip/ (which is linked to at the bottom of that WAMP guide).

You need to be aware of a few things first, please read this:

    1. Having a localserver like WAMP does not make your site publicly accessible without further configuration that we cannot support here. WAMP’s support is at https://forum.wampserver.com
    2. If you insist on making your site publicly accessible with WAMP, you will need to keep that computer online 24/7 and work out a heavy usage and uptime contract with your ISP, which could cost hundreds of dollars per month.
    3. If you computer turns off or goes offline, you site goes down.
    4. Most home PCs cannot handle an average amount of web traffic and will crash.

Because of this, I strongly recommend going with a regular hosting provider, like these: https://www.ads-software.com/hosting/

    With a regular hosting provider:

    1. The server is already configured, publicly accessible with an uptime guarentee, and fully supported by them.
    2. Installing WordPress looks more like this: https://www.ads-software.com/documentation/article/use-automated-installation/ (if not automatically installed)
    3. After getting your hosting account, you’ll be up and running in minutes.

I understand the concern about cost, but that heavy usage and uptime contract with your ISP will be far more costly. Of the recommended hosting providers, https://wordpress.com/wordpress-hosting/ offers a free plan, https://www.dreamhost.com/wordpress/ starts at $2.59/month, https://www.hostinger.com/wordpress starts at $2.69/month, and https://www.bluehost.com/special/wordpress starts at $2.95/month.

Of those, I have personally used WordPress.com, DreamHost, and Bluehost for my own sites.

For less than $3/month, you’ll be running WordPress on a fully configured, fully supported, and publicly accessible server in less than 5 minutes.

Based on your forum history, you’ve been trying to get WordPress running on your how home PC for 3 months, so please do consider that.

Things got messy with my original install of wamp. So I reinstalled the wamp server and now it does not work. At least when I had apache 2.4 php 8 and mysql I had some things working. Now I cannot get anything to work. This is so aggravating!

So it is back to the beginning with wamp. It does not work. I don’t have any error problems.

If you insist on using WAMP, then you need to follow the guide at https://make.www.ads-software.com/core/handbook/tutorials/installing-wordpress-locally/wampserver/ to set it up for WordPress.

If that does not work, you need to contact WAMP’s support at https://forum.wampserver.com/

I am also getting a database connection error. I found a wp-config.php file. I don’t have a database set up yet but it is trying to connect to one.

OK does anybody know how good wordpress..com is? They are a bit pricey. I am retired and have purchased some stuff for resale. Is it really worth it. Is it fairly easy to use? If I get a positive feedback then this thread is done. Otherwise I will continue to try to get word press setup on my computer.

    Thanks for the help.
