Static Home Page gives 404

    My client is a non-profit with hosting on 1and1. The current theme is a child theme of TwentyFourteen. Last Saturday (9/19) the Home Page suddenly began giving a ‘404 Page not found’ error.

    When you type in the URL for the site, ‘/index/’ is getting added to the end, causing the 404.

    It is not a permalink or .htaccess problem. I have deleted .htaccess and saved the permalinks to regenerate it. I have tried using a .htaccess rule to redirect to index.php, but that also failed.

    It is not a plugin or theme problem. With ALL plugins deactivated and using the TwentyFifteen theme, the problem still occurs.

    Anyone have any suggestions (other than changing hosting)?
