Static page blog entries showing complete text

I am in the process of producing my first WordPress web site but have encountered a small problem. I want to show the latest blog entries on a static home page and have achieved this but not exactly as I want it. The problem is that the complete text from the entry is showing and I only want the part before the <!–more–> to show. It works fine on the Blog home page.
