• Every day, the MySQL server of my hoster is down for a few minutes (backup, maintenance, whatever). During that time, my visitors get an ugly error messages without any layout, in English and probably thought for me as the administrator only:
    Error establishing a database connection
This either means that the username and password information in your wp-config.php file is incorrect or we can’t contact the database server at localhost.
    * Are you sure you have the correct username and password?
    * Are you sure that you have typed the correct hostname?
    * Are you sure that the database server is running?
Can I 1. change this error message and 2. can I provide a static version of my blog in case of a problem with the MySQL database connection?

Might be easier and more practical to find a new host.

No way, I’m satisfied with my hoster and even without the regular maintenance in the middle of the night, the MySQL server might be down sometime.
In such a situation, there should be a nice looking error message in the blog’s layout and language, or even better, a static version of the blog. Don’t you think so?

If you need static versions u should try an alternative solution. such as movabletype. the way i see it, the whole idea of WordPress is to get rid of the nasty “page bulding” required by most other software.

Well, then I guess you’ll just have to fork off
a new version and build WordPressStatic.

If you don’t want to find a new host, at least head over to WebHostingTalk and ask them if that’s the best way a host is supposed to do backups and maintenence. It just doesn’t seem right.
