stats?

    I am not sure whether this needs to go here or over at wordpress.com since it’s the wordpress.com stats. I’ve read the documentation on why sometimes I have unknown search terms, but why don’t some show up? I was looking at my stats today and noticed that earlier this week I got 3 views from search engines, but under the search terms, there were no terms listed. It just said “no search terms.” Why am I not seeing any search terms sometimes but not the unknown search terms link?

    Hi Bob,

    There are a couple of possible reasons:
    1. We try to provide real-time stats information as quickly as possible for you. Some elements of the stats page require a bit of processing, so are delayed a bit. That’s why, sometimes, you’ll see a high number of visits to your site but a relatively low number of visitors. After a few hours, it has been made right (as our system did the crunching to determine who was a new visitor and who wasn’t, etc).

    2. Generally, Google has started encrypting more and more search referral information, so we simply have a lot less to work with. With this, since we aren’t being passed the search terms, we’re unable to display them.

    Hmm, I haven’t looked at the number of visitors to my site, so this doesn’t seem like a possibility. I’ve seen the unknown search terms message, but that’s not what I’m wondering about. What is happening is I will look at a day of views, and it will say I have 1 visitor from radiodiscussions.com, 2 visitors from www.ads-software.com, and 1 visitor from a search engine. When I go down to search terms though, it simply says “No search terms” not the link that says “Unknown search terms.”

    Sure thing. Referrer information isn’t perfect and could be a handful of factors for the difference (language of the search engine, etc). We parse and display what we’re able to get from the referrer information.

    Sadly for us who love stats, as encrypted searches become the norm, the data collected in that area will becoming increasingly unhelpful.
