status never changed from “on hold” to “processing”

We had an order that was automatically put to “on hold” status due to “E Check clearing through PayPal.”
Once the E check through PayPal cleared, the status never changed from “on hold” to “processing”. Which means it stayed in “on hold” status until the customer called, upset, to inquire about his order. 8 days after the payment was received.
We had to go into woo and manually change it to processing so it would process through our system.
Once the payment was received, why did it not automatically change to processing and move through the system?
