Step by step instructions for installing style?

  • Hi, I’m sorry this is very basic – and I’ve tried to look for existing info – but I need help figuring out how to install a new style, e.g. one of the alternatives available on a myriad of sites such as https://www.alexking.org/index.php?content=software/wordpress/styles.php .
    I need step-by-step instructions without assuming anything. I have downloaded the zip file and unzipped it. It gives me a a css file and some images. What do I do with these? Where do I put them? How do I incorporate them into my blog design?
    I have shell access. What directory do I put these in? And then when I’m in the admin panel, what do I do under Templates with the index.php file?
    I’m afraid I don’t have css knowledge, I’m used to HTML edits. (So ideally I’d actually like to just create my own layout, but I figured I should first start by figuring out how I incorporate a style from someone else.)

  • I don’t use shell access, but the process is this:
    -rename the css file to ‘wp-layout.css’
    – upload that into your main wordpress directory. It will overwrite the existing css (so you might want to rename the old one to ‘wp-layoutOLD.css’).
    – upload the images to that directory as well. If they came in a folder when you unzipped, upload the folder. If they came not in a folder, just upload them as they are.
    That should do the trick.
    There is nothing to then to in the Templates section, unless you then want to alter the new style.

    some sites provide modified index files as well. just like you did with the .css file, rename the old index.php to indexOLD.php and upload the new one the main wordpress folder.

    Awesome, thank you so much! That’s the info I was missing. Perhaps it would help to add a line to the Wiki that says something along these lines: “Here’s how you install/change the default styel in WordPress” – so the page would come up in response to searches on that question. Just a thought. Thank you!
