I would not blame you if you don’t believe this.

Antidotally this begins after a username and password is entered incorrectly one. This is no recovering from this. The plug in will not allow me to login after everything below was attempted (including uninstalling it):

Validate the username and password is correct.

Used a different valid username and password.

Used a different browser (Chrome instead of Edge).

Unlocked the accounts in the plugin’s settings. I had to access WordPress thought my hosting provider’s panel because, you guessed it, I can’t login to WordPress using the admin username and password.

    Deleted the plugin’s lockout log.

    Deactivated the plugin.

    Uninstalled the plugin.

    Deleted WordPress cache.

Deleted the broswer’s cache, cookies, etc.

And still I get locked out even though the plugin isn’t installed.

Wish I could attach the screenshot. It’s the typical “Max failed logins. Please wait about 30 minutes and try again.” error.

Also, I am not using GoDaddy. I am using Dreamhost.

The plugin is not installed in the wp-content/plugins directory.

The plugin is not installed in the wp-content/mu-plugins directory.

There are no subdirectories in the wp-content/mu-plugins directory.

    1. Do you use any proxy or VPN? The response might be cached there, but should not be for such a long time.
    2. Can you show a screenshot of the error? Is it possible that another plugin does that?

Things finally did correct themselves. I don’t know why. The plugin was still behaving poorly even after all the actions listed above were taken. Apparently, something just needed more time to clear out.

I reinstalled Limit Login Attempts Reloaded and W3 Total Cache. To test the issue was fixed I enter a wrong password once, I would receive the correct behavior from Limit Login Attempts Reloaded, and the next attempt I entered the correct password and I was successfully logged in (after 1 failed login attempt).

For the next test I entered the wrong password 3 times (3 failed login attempts, possibly only 2) and that was it. It didn’t matter what I did from there out. Correct username and password – “failed login attempt”. Took the corrective actions listed above – “failed login attempt”.

If it helps figure out the root cause of this, I’m using Dreamhost and a custom login url “/bi-login/”. I don’t know if this would matter.

Also, after uninstalling Limit Login Attempts Reloaded, the error message changed to “Max failed logins. Please wait about 30 minutes and try again.” I don’t know where it got 30 minutes from. None of my settings were set to 30 minutes before I deleted the plugin.

Lastly, after reinstalling Limit Login Attempts Reloaded I noticed the dashboard showed failed login attempts from before I deleted and reinstalled the plugin. Obviously not all plugin data was removed. How do I manually delete Limit Login Attempts Reloaded and all it’s data?

Thank you very much for your help with this. I really would like to use this plugin.

Thank you for this extended description of the problem. It is obvious now that you have some additional brute-force protection installed, b/c the “Max failed logins. Please wait about 30 minutes and try again.” message is not a part of our plugin. The issue got more complicated b/c some caching might be involved, and not just from W3 Total Cache, but also Dreamhost might have other caching engines like memcached or something similar. We recommend you asking them what exactly they use. Regarding the plugin removal – you need to go to its Logs tab, purge all lockouts and logs using buttons there, then delete it from the plugins page or by deleting its folder (limit-login-attempts-reloaded) from the plugins directory on your server.
