Still no dashboard

    Good evening WordPress Hive!

    I’m hoping that somebody can help: I migrated from WP.com to WP.org and self-hosted. I can get to the admin page, but the dashboard is still inoperative: I have 2 boxes showing: one headed Activity and the other headed WordPress News. I cannot get in to make the necessary updates to the content.

    I have changed the themes and plugins in FTP with my host (using FileZilla), so the themes are in default and the plugins are disabled and this is about the limit of my knowledge

    At one point, the site appeared to disappear, but I backed up from the WP.com dashboard and repaired the broken files, so it’s OK now, but still no dashboard

    I really don’t know where to go next and I have a big presentation coming up which means that I will need full access to an up-to-date website

    Any advice (in simple-to-understand terminology) will be VERY gratefully received!

    Sorry for the problem with the WordPress site not working. First, I think that the main issue is confusion over what you’re importing from a WordPress.com site and then using in a stand-alone (www.ads-software.com) installation. Typically, it’s been my experience that only data is being transferred into the www.ads-software.com site. None of the functionality from the WordPress.com site should be transferred over. All of the installation files for the www.ads-software.com site should be working via the web server and database server in the host that is the destination of the import (and the location of the standalone WordPress installation). The URL that you are using to access the site should be accessing this same installation. Can you please clarify how you are accessing the new site? It should be a different URL from your WordPress.com site. You said that you’re self-hosting as well. Does your host have all the necessary pre-requisites for the installation to work properly? It does sound like you managed to get it working at one point. If you were able to make it work BEFORE the import, then there should be no reason that the WordPress is not working. Please let us know how you installed it and what kind of platform you’re installing it to. If you can provide a URL for the installation, we can also look at the site to see what might be happening. If you haven’t already, make sure that you have the debug mode enabled (in the wp-config.php file). Please provide us a little more information and we can look at it further. If you are of a mind to start over, you can install a fresh standalone WordPress site and then use a plugin like the WordPress Importer. There’s also more information in the Codex about importing content.

    Hi Arncus,
    Thanks for your reply. The URL is https://www.cymortho.co.uk
    I understand some of what you are talking about – I’m still quite new to this game!

    The site is hosted by sgis.co.uk, and I think that I used the 5 minute install from the CGI scripts menu. However, I’m not 100% convinced that it worked, and when I tried it again, it came up with an error message about a directory not being empty (I don’t know which directory this is, and how to empty it!)

    I paid to have the site migrated and the person that did it is telling me that the procedure worked (and it appears that this is so), but has not been very forthcoming since then, so I’ve had to take the matter into my own hands. The site is OK, but I need to improve functionality and add some plugins.

    I’ve looked at the pages you suggest, and have taken some of the actions – I managed to back up the data and repair the broken files.

    If I could only access the dashboard, I can really get to work!
