18 months after this issue was supposedly resolved, my SSP feed for my podcast at https://wheelbearings.media/ still does not work in Google podcasts and never has. It works in every other podcast app (Pocket Casts, Google Play music, Spotify, TuneIn, Overcast, Apple Podcasts, etc) that I have tried on both Android and iOS as well as web players. I have moved my WP site hosting to a new provider (BlueHost) and the audio hosting to RedCircle. When I enter the straight feed from redcircle in GP, episodes play fine. When I try to play from the SSP generated feed at https://wheelbearings.media/feed/podcast the episodes will not play.

    Any thoughts?

  • You have a mixed content warning on your site in Chrome, with the feed link that you provided. Google Podcasts is likely kicking it back because it’s not all SSL. I’m sure the plugin authors can give you more advice, but when we had the issue with Google Podcasts, we changed the link we were providing SSP from the absolute path to a relative path and it works every time now.

That seems fine if the audio files are hosted on the same server as the WP site, but how do I do a relative path to a file that is hosted on an entirely different server with a different domain?

That is the reason why I said the authors would have to give you more advice. The problem is definitely in the SSL situation – Google Podcasts is basically framing the existing content, and secure sites will not display non-secure sites, for any framed content.

So I don’t know the answer, but I do see the problem, sorry ??

Thanks, both my WP site and the audio hosting provider are ssl, but they have different certificates. I’m at a loss as to how to fix this

We’ve seen some users have an issue just with Google Play that has to do with the internal redirect that SSP performs in order to gather listenership data through our Seriously Simple Stats module. You can disable this redirect if you’d like (and you’re able to get analytics elsewhere like I see you have Podtrac enabled on your feed). This will link to your files directly from your RSS feed, and not to the /podcast-download/post-title.mp3 route (which then redirects to the ultimate destination of the media file).

To do this you can use this gist: https://gist.github.com/TheCraigHewitt/e918e39c4432334fc59d4d99dd0f8cb4

Hope that helps, and if there’s anything else we can do just let us know.
