Still see the occasional comment notification

Every few days a comment notification appears on the wp-admin/edit-comments.php pages. The comments don’t show on the site. They are all clearly spam. I wonder, what are the spammers doing to achieve this given there is no comment form on my site? It looks like they somehow bypass that process and inject spam directly. Any ideas?
