    Hi,
    I have been unable to access my wp-admin dashboard for some time now and am unable to make changes/update my site.
    I have tried renaming the plugins folder, I have tried renaming the theme folder as advised but I still cannot get into my dashboard. I see a series of links to everything on the left of my screen but if I click one I get the message: Oops! That page can’t be found.
    I had a conversation with my hosting service the other day and they said that I had two deny codes in my htaccess files which were causing the problem and deleted them for me.
    The files were:

    <FilesMatch “.(py|exe|php)$”>
    Order allow,deny
    Deny from all
    </FilesMatch>
    <FilesMatch “^(about.php|radio.php|index.php|content.php|lock360.php)$”>
    Order allow,deny
    Allow from all
    </FilesMatch>
    They were in public_html –> wp-admin –> .htaccess

    Should these files not have been deleted? If not how do I put them back, or is there something that I can try to use to repair my dashboard.

    I am desperate to get this resolved as at present none of my pupils who are in group tuition can book lessons and I cannot update anything.

    Thank you.

    That looks like a misconfigured security thing. There’s no need for an .htaccess file in your wp-admin folder. Delete it.

    Thread Starter kevinackford

    (@kevinackford)

    @sterndata I have deleted the .htaccess file from my wp-admin folder, cleared the cache, retried but still get the same.

    Hey, when I look at your site’s home page, I see a 404 error for this critical file: https://kevinackford.uk/wp-content/themes/newshop-ecommerce/style.css

    Try reinstalling your theme or restoring that file from a backup.

    Welcome to your WordPress Dashboard! This is the screen you will see when you log in to your site, and gives you access to all the site management features of WordPress. You can get help for any screen by clicking the Help tab above the screen title.

    The left-hand navigation menu provides links to all of the WordPress administration screens, with submenu items displayed on hover. You can minimise this menu to a narrow icon strip by clicking on the Collapse Menu arrow at the bottom.

    Links in the toolbar at the top of the screen connect your dashboard and the front end of your site, and provide access to your profile and helpful WordPress information.

    You can use the following controls to arrange your Dashboard screen to suit your workflow. This is true on most other administration screens as well.

    Screen Options — Use the Screen Options tab to choose which Dashboard boxes to show.

    Drag and Drop — To rearrange the boxes, drag and drop by clicking on the title bar of the selected box and releasing when you see a grey dotted-line rectangle appear in the location you want to place the box.

    Box Controls — Click the title bar of the box to expand or collapse it. Some boxes added by plugins may have configurable content, and will show a “Configure” link in the title bar if you hover over it.

    The boxes on your Dashboard screen are:

    Welcome — Shows links for some of the most common tasks when setting up a new site.

    Site Health Status – Informs you of any potential issues that should be addressed to improve the performance or security of your website.

    At a Glance – Displays a summary of the content on your site and identifies which theme and version of WordPress you are using.

    Activity — Shows the upcoming scheduled posts, recently published posts, and the most recent comments on your posts and allows you to moderate them.

    Quick Draft — Allows you to create a new post and save it as a draft. Also displays links to the 3 most recent draft posts you've started.

    WordPress Events and News — Upcoming events near you as well as the latest news from the official WordPress project and the WordPress Planet.

    Screen elements
    Some screen elements can be shown or hidden by using the checkboxes. They can be expanded and collapsed by clicking on their headings, and arranged by dragging their headings or by clicking on the up and down arrows.

    If I reinstall the theme will I not lose the site that is there?

    Thanks for your help so far I have to go now but will pick this up again tomorrow.
    If I upgrade and download the newer version of the theme can I move everything across to the updated theme or do I need the dashboard that I cannot access for that?

    Thank you again

    No, you will not lost the site. The content is in the database; the theme is responsible for displaying it and at least one of its files is missing. Download the theme from https://www.ads-software.com/themes/newshop-ecommerce/, then go to APPEARANCE->THEMES on the dashboard, click ADD NEW, then click UPLOAD THEME to upload the file you just downloaded.

    Thread Starter kevinackford

    (@kevinackford)

    @sterndata

    Thank you, there is just one problem with this.

    then go to APPEARANCE->THEMES on the dashboard, click ADD NEW, then click UPLOAD THEME to upload the file you just downloaded.

    If I press any of the links on the left of my screen it comes up with the Oops! That page can’t be found message so I am unable to use my dashboard.

    OK, then let’s try this: Unzip the theme file locally. Via FTP or your hosting control panel’s file manager app, navigate to wp-content/themes/themename and delete that directory, then upload the director from the file you just unzipped.

    Thread Starter kevinackford

    (@kevinackford)

    Hi again @sterndata

    I have navigated to wp-content/themes/newshop-ecommerce and deleted the folder then uploaded the unzipped new-shop-ecommerce folder from my PC but still get the same.

    As far as I am aware people can still view and make purchases on the site it is just that during COVID the group lessons part of sales has be disabled and now need to enable it again. https://www.kevinackford.uk

    Could the problem not be with WordPress? as I thought that the Dashboard was a part of WordPress and not the theme.

    I am sure that with your capable help we can get it sorted out, I really do appreciate your time on helping with this problem.

    well, the 404 problem is gone and your site works from the front end. Have you cleared your browser’s cache?

    Thread Starter kevinackford

    (@kevinackford)

    I have cleared the cache, logged back in to my admin and still get the same list of links.
    I tried pressing the all pages link and I get my menu at the top of the page and the message
    Oops! That page can’t be found.
    It looks like nothing was found at this location. Maybe try one of the links below or a search?
    If you need a screen shot how do I place one on here?

    Do you see any errors in the browser console when logged in and on wp-admin? And have you removed the .htaccess file in wp-admin?

    Thread Starter kevinackford

    (@kevinackford)

    The .htaccess file in wp-admin has been removed there are now only .php files and an error_log file
    I don’t know what you mean by “errors in the browser console.”
    I apologise I am not very technically minded when it comes to the website
