• I uploaded my wordpress files to my root server at 69.89.17.17/blog using ftp to transfer them.
I changed the directory name to blog
I typed in my url as follows
    https://bryangreifinger.com/blog/wp-admin/install.php
    And now i’m getting
    404 Not Found
The requested URL /blog/wp-admin/install.php does not exist
And I also changed my wp-config file accordingly
    What did i do wrong?

    thanks,

  • did you upload to your public_html folder or a directory that is web accessible?

    This could be why:
    https://69.89.17.17/

edit – there is also install4free

I’m no WP expert by far but here are 2 places you can get step-by-step installation instructions:

https://tomdean.net/wordpress.pdf – 40+ pages with step by step install – includes screen shots and plugin install instructions.

WordPress Quickstart Screencast Tutorial video – https://ia311507.us.archive.org/0/items/RachelCunliffeWordpressTutorial1_0/Wordpress1.swf

    Hope this helps!

Ok here’s something that needs to be added to the instructions for EVERYONE to see so that they can EASILY figure out how to get their website up and running.

First of all the instructions on this website say that you can place your files ANYWHERE on your server….NO WAY!!!

As I was previously instructed it appears to be needed in the public_html directory.

Secondly, you must REMOVE your servers parking screen BEFORE you can see your initial wordpress screen.

And finally, you need to enter into your URL the name of your site, followed by the name of the directory where your wordpress files are located. For example mine is bryangreifinger.com and my files are located under the directory “blog” so I had to enter:

https://www.bryangreifinger.com/blog and i finally saw the initial wordpress screen.

If someone adds these instructions upfront I think there might be fewer questions. Then again maybe I’m so brand new that everyone else knows this.
