Is it possible to force WordPress to stop cropping avatars? On my B2B community website, the users should upload their company logotype as avatars and the cropping of wide logos make them unreadable.

I’ve disabled thumbnail cropping at Settings > Media and regenerated all thumbnails with “Regenerate thumbnails” plugin, but the avatars are still cropped.

    Any advice?

  • Hello Victor,

WordPress uses Gravatar by default for profile pictures — the’s no built-in way of uploading avatars at all.

What plugin are you using for your avatars?

Or is this a BuddyPress site?

I use the plugin WPUF Pro where users can register a WordPress account via a frontend register form. I asked the WPUF support about the cropped Avatars but they referred back to WordPress:

“Regarding image cropping WPUF unable to do anything because of Image/avatar cropping managed by WordPress.”

This is how it looks on the user profile: https://imgur.com/a/KhpH2n5

This is not a WordPress issue. The plugin authors chose to use internal WP functions to resize images with cropping. They could also choose to add the capability to resize without cropping. That would require additional code development on their part.

They should have instead told you that their plugin does not currently support what you requested, and it is possible the feature could be added in the future. WordPress certainly has its faults, including an upcoming release that has the potential to be a “jump the shark” moment, but this isn’t one of them.

Thanks Dion Design! I guess I’ll have to find a savvy developer that can tweak WPUF for me.

Does this “shark moment” start with a G and end with an utenberg?
