• By default, the Twenty Twelve theme forces menu entries and some other things to be uppercase.

    I created several top level pages, eg

    composers

    and added them to the main menu.

    They are shown in uppercase, eg

    COMPOSERS

    All menu items are similarly modified.

    Subscribe2 produces a short line of text that says

    Enter your email address to receive brief emails when we publish something new

    but the obsessive Twenty Twelve forces it to say

    ENTER YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS TO RECEIVE BRIEF EMAILS WHEN WE PUBLISH SOMETHING NEW

    I have never seen any prior warning of any of these forced changes.

    I was not asked whether I would like them.

    Uppercase is harder to read than lowercase or combinations of upper and lower case characters.

    Uppercase gives the impression of shouting, or appearing imperative or harsh, like something from the military.

    IS THAT HARD TO UNDERSTAND?

    Twenty Twelve is mostly a very nice looking theme, clean, clear, uncluttered. I was surprised and disappointed to see that it forces text changes which make things harder to read and appear a bit vicious.

    All for the sake of someone’s bizarre idea of appearance or “style”.

    Since you like uppercase, here’s some more for you.

    IMPOSING THAT FORCED CHANGE ON PEOPLE, BOTH WEBSITE PRODUCERS AND READERS, WAS AN INAPPROPRIATE, ARROGANT, INTRUSIVE, OBSESSIVE, IMPRACTICAL, STUPID THING TO DO.

    Until recently I’ve fixed this bad behaviour by simply deleting the three text transform lines from the styles.css file. (Yes, very naughty to edit that file, but then putting this obsessive junk into the file was far worse.)

    That has not worked after the most recent update to Twenty Twelve.

    I have wondered whether that’s related to my change from Bluehost to Siteground several weeks ago, but the file when reopened has no text transform instructions.

    Perhaps Say What or something similar would fix this fault, but I don’t see why I should need to add every instance of page title, menu entry and other text to a list, just to kill something that should never have been imposed on anyone.

    All instances of forcing uppercase should be removed from the next updates of all the themes that do it. Soon.

    In the meantime, how do I kill this inappropriate behaviour in Twenty Twelve?

  • First off, there’s no need to post in all caps at us, regardless of whatever Twenty Twelve does.

    Can you post a link to a page that shows all the text you’d like to change?

    ps … forced page refresh made no difference.

    Thanks for the prompt response. Our posts crossed there.

    Re “First off, there’s no need to post in all caps at us, regardless of whatever Twenty Twelve does.” – if uppercase looks like shouting in this post then it looks like shouting in people’s website menu items and everywhere else this unwelcome change is imposed.

    That was the point of putting those post lines in uppercase, since that’s the effect of it.

    So you don’t like forced uppercase either ??

    Re “the text you’d like to change” – the point was that the text was modified on the way out but should not have been, not that I would like to change it back again.

    Forced change is still happening in browsers that I have tried in this computer (Chrome, Firefox) and the same ones in Android.

    It is not necessary to post in all caps to get your point across.

    Can you clarify what the problem is? You seem to have successfully eliminated the forced uppercase letters on your site.

    Re “It is not necessary to post in all caps to get your point across.”, you have simply repeated the same thing with no reasoning.

    No less necessary than the theme’s built in fault is unnecessary.

    Again – if you dislike the uppercase in the post then you dislike forced uppercase in the theme, and quite rightly so.

    Are we finished with that point now?

    I also see lowercase now. For many days forced refreshes made no difference.

    As I said above, reopening the css file from the Siteground server shows no text-transform, so I would be surprised if anything funny happened at that end.

    I would not have thought that either Chrome or Firefox would have kept an old version of a css file or anything else relevant to a page beyond a forced refresh of it.

    Any ideas?

    Re: posting in all caps. As they say, two wrongs don’t make a right.

    Are you using a caching plugin on your site? You should temporarily disable it while you edit your site. Also, your hosting provider may be caching your site as well.

    Hi, got your solution, just tried it and works. I am trying ti change width of header image abd nav menu, and in the styles.css file went across this:

    .main-navigation li a {
    border-bottom: 0;
    color: #6a6a6a;
    line-height: 3.692307692;
    text-transform: uppercase;
    white-space: nowrap;

    You can change text-transform to lowercase or none, and it works!

    My second post in wordpress, a real rookie. Hope it helps!
    Maria
    BTW if you know how to deal with image an nav menu, your idea will be welcome!

    Forgive my typos!
