Stories open to black, empty screen.

Nice work on the Web Stories plugin. We are trying out this interesting format and have encountered a problem with featuring it on our site.
When we use the Stories block to show web stories on a post or page, the stories open to a black overlay. The black overlay is appears opaque and fills the screen, making it look like the story failed to initiate (it’s also a bit jarring to be suddenly faced with a blank, black screen). Clicking anywhere on the black screen does reveal the story.
The problem does not occur when a story is opened via direct link or when a specific story is embedded in a post or page (also via direct link), but does affect every other configuration of the Stories block we have tried so far, regardless of what post or page the block is used on. Any ideas what may be causing this behavior and how the issue may be fixed?

Indeed, on our end the black overlay also disappears upon pressing the escape key or clicking anywhere on the overlay.
Using a staging environment, we have also verified the following:
- The behavior persists when all plugins except Web Stories are deactivated.
- The behavior persists when the child theme is deactivated (the parent theme is Twenty Twenty).
- The behavior persists on the parent theme when all custom CSS is removed from the theme customizer.
- The behavior persists on fresh activations of other themes (we tested with Twenty Twenty-One and Eksell).
The site is running WordPress 5.8 with PhP 7.4.21.
