When I first started using this plugin, backend/editing performance was quite bad. You could only edit one story at a time, but there was no lag (like when flicking between tiles, trying to insert text/cursor etc).

Then about 2-3 weeks ago performance became great. I could open like 10 stories at once in tabs and edit them all, no issues.

Now, it’s back to being as bad as ever, including lag between tiles within a story, selecting text to edit, etc, etc. With only one story tab open.

Just wondering if you guys made any changes/monitor the backend performance?

    Thanks

  • @mdotk Hiya! The Web Stories team continues to measure and improve its performance.

Performance issues can sometimes be due to some kind of conflict between Web Stories and something else that’s part of your site – hosting, plugins, or theme, for example.

Do you experience these issues while using a default WordPress theme and while Web Stories is the only plugin activated? We can try to evaluate this on our end by testing your plugins from the Site Health information if you wish to share privately here.

You could also test as well by disabling all your plugins one by one to see if you still get the performance issues.

Sharing a screenshot or screen recording of the issue can be helpful, as well as any browser console errors while the issue occurs. You can use services like JumpShare or Recordit to share.

Hi @luckynasan thanks for the reply. My plugins, themes, hosting, etc have all remained static during this time. However I did just submit the form in relation to my other thread (404 image) so maybe you can take a look at that data from a performance perspective too. Thank you!

@mdotk Thank you for sharing the details. You can try clearing your cache in caching plugins, server-side caching, and browser caching to help with performance. Do you still see issues (lag between tiles and text editing) after clearing all and any cache, and on a Chrome incognito window?

Hi @luckynasan, I’m afraid that I do still see the lag ??

@mdotk If possible, could you check for any browser console errors in the browser dev tools and send us a screenshot?

If you see an error, it would be great if we can get the _Response_ on the request too. Here’s how to do it:

    – In the dev tools, go to the _Network tab_
    – Find and select the request that failed under the _Name column_. It should be highlighted in red (you may need to refresh the page again).
    – Go to the _Response tab_, and take a screenshot or copy/ paste what is there.

Here’s a video example on where to navigate: https://recordit.co/90feR8mX5h

Hi @luckynasan please see here: https://i.imgur.com/zVFPSFo.png

The full URLs of those files is:

    /wp-content/plugins/wordpress-seo/js/dist/analysis-worker.js
    /sm/f07d8d7b2652873f48…………………map (404)

No idea what this .map URL is!

@mdotk The .map URL is from Yoast SEO but that shouldn’t have any impact on load times. Do you experience these performance issues on any other devices or browsers? Do you perhaps have another website you can install Web Stories itself to see if the issue still persists?

    (@mdotk)

Hi @luckynasan my writers all tell me the same problem too. Also, I run web stories on a few sites already – all have the same issue :(.

@mdotk Unfortunately, we haven’t had other reports of performance issues with this latest version and aren’t able to reproduce it. There could be a combination of reasons why you’re encountering this such as other applications running on your machine, the device you are using, hosting setup, third party plugin conflicts, caching plugins, browser caching, and/or server-side caching.

The best suggestion is to create a temporary clean WordPress install on a site, using the default theme, and activate only Web Stories to check if the same issue occurs. You can try to test on different devices in private browser windows too.

@mdotk We’ll close this topic here. Thanks again for your post. Feel free to open a new support topic if you have other questions about the Web Stories plugin.

Just as a follow up to this @luckynasan, I noticed that the web stories plugin only performs poorly on my site with like 5K+ posts and heaps of images in its database.

Other sites with less posts (say under 500 posts) it performs perfectly.

The 5K post site doesn’t lag in other areas though (like the normal WP editor screen etc).

Anyway, I thought maybe this piece of info would be useful.
