Strange Blockout behaivour

    I have a simple site with wordfence installed. I have been gettign regular email alerts that a user with ip address 23.235.210.217 (location Los Angeles) is getting blocked for trying to log in using invalid user names including “admin”. After a whole bunch of these I went to the wordfence blocking rules section and selected to make that ip address permanently blocked.

    Once I did that, I was suddenly blocked out and had to use the recover link to get an email to be able to log back in. That is not my ip address, I am not in L.A., and I have not tried to log in using admin or the other invalid user name (same as site name).

    What the heck is going on?

  • Hi @markf1,

    The IP address 23.235.210.217 is owned by InMotion Hosting Inc. which is also the same host that manages your website.

    I imagine that your website is behind a proxy or CDN, so Wordfence is unable to obtain the correct IP address for your users.

    Can you try this:

    1. Determine your IP address by going to https://www.google.com/search?q=what+is+my+ip
    2. Go to Wordfence -> All Options
    3. Find the section How does Wordfence get IPs
    4. Click through every available option until Your IP with this setting matches the IP you found in step 1
    5. Once you’ve found the correct option, click Save Changes in the top-right corner

    Were you able to obtain the correct IP address for your server? Note that if your server is still getting the wrong IP address, this will result in innocent people getting locked out or IP banned.
