What could be the purpose of this code? Especially if there is nothing wrong with the layout.

Not sure as part of it appears to be encoded. Does your theme use timthumb by any chance?

A really bad – if not downright malicious – plugin.

I don’ quite understand. You mean that some of the plugins I use could be malicious. But this happens only on the home page. Wouldn’t a plugin react on all of the pages?

That depends upon the plugin. But on balance, I think it’s more likely to be a hack – which would explain why only the home page was targeted.
