This issue refers to the Stripe for WooCommerce Plugin.

When Processing payments on our website with Stripe for WooCommerce, after pressing the “PLACE ORDER” button the processing time is taking approximately 25 seconds to finalize on the payment.

Typically this processing time takes less than 10 seconds. How can we fix this issue so our Stripe payments are processed in a timely manner and website visitors do not close the window before payment is completed.

We’ve been experiencing the same issue since around 8-9 September. Since then processing for payments time varies between 20-30 seconds, much longer than it took previously (less than 10 seconds). We’re investigating because we had a noticeable drop in online sales, so we suspect some customers are abandoning the purchase and/or navigating away from the checkout page because their payment is taking so long to process.

Hi there,

First, I’d recommend making a full backup, then updating to the latest version of WooCommerce. Once that’s done, there are a few things that could be going on here. I am writing here mostly to be posted in this matter

We are experiencing the same thing. For us this slow (21 seconds) load time happens only for credit cards with 3D authentication. WooSupport already looking in to it, but it’s funny they said, that it is uncommon and 2 more people here have the same issue.

Also we tried to switch to default theme and let only WooCommerce and Stripe active. This made the “intent_verify” load only 3 seconds. But with each plugin active it grows up to 21 seconds.

For credit cards WITHOUT 3D verification process (almost nobody in EU market) it is fast as it should be (less than 3 seconds load time)

Hope you can fix the plugin. I would not be shocked if the other user would not even know this is happening on their site.

An update as to how we’ve progressed with this checkout speed issue – many blogs recommends disabling all the plugins then enabling/testing one by one to see if one is causing some issue or conflict, so that’s what we asked our developer to do. Surprisingly it seems that Yoast may have been causing some of the delays. Extract below from our developer’s report:

“After many tests we were able to determine that the Yoast SEO plugin was for some reason causing an additional delay with this process. With this plugin disabled the payment process was around 10 seconds faster. We’re not sure when this plugin would have started to affect this process. We’re also not sure why Yoast was affecting this process at all. Yoast is a very popular plugin and we were surprised to see it affecting this Woocommerce process. We have now installed a new SEO plugin to replace Yoast (called Rank Math). We were able to migrate all the data from Yoast so any SEO settings for meta data descriptions etc you may have set up previously still apply.”

Hey Jr,

Thank you for that. Disabling Yoast did make it at least 2 times faster. And using older version of stripe makes it also 20% faster. So with old version of Stripe and No Yoast we are looking at some quite reasonable checkout time at 13 seconds with 3D Authentications enabled.

Although it is still quite slow compared to Braintree checkout we was using before, which as around 4 seconds tops.

But stripe gives much better deal money-wise…. so, it is a tough call.

I would just hope Automattic could make the plugin as fast as the Braintree. Having 13 seconds load time is obviously unecessary in 2020 when Braintree (also official plugin by WooCommerce) can have fast checkout process.

That is concerning that you’re seeing a 13 second load time.

Can you use the browser Network tool to see where this delay is coming from, please?

If you’re able to test with only WooCommerce, Stripe, and our Storefront theme active, this will help narrow down where the delay is happening.

For me this is called ?wc-ajax=stripe_verify_intent&order=XYXYXY

Depending on how many of our plugins is active, this “request” takes between 4 seconds (no plugins active) to 21 seconds when all plugins active.

So far what plugins cause delay (active separately, not togetehr)

Affiliate WP – 0,4 sec
AeroCheckout: Custom WooCommerce Checkout Pages – +8 seconds
Google Tag Manager – + 6 secodns
CBM2 – + 2 seconds
Redux + 5 seconds
PixelYourSite + 5 seconds
RankMath SEO – +5 seconds
Yoast SEO – + 10 seconds

All these times are projected in the ?wc-ajax=stripe_verify_intent&order=XYXYXY

Four seconds is definitely more reasonable! The fact that each plugin is adding that much more time, though, may mean there are some performance issues on your site. You may want to check out our guide to troubleshooting a slow site in case there’s something else going on.
