I wanted to give this a try but after installing and activating, agreeing to the opt-in, then it asked to update from the server or something, I don’t remember, that was a few days ago, I said yes, it’s now stuck on the update page that said it would be 5 seconds or maybe 5 minutes.

Then I tried deactivating the plugin but that broke the plugin page and now that’s another problem, whew. Also, having issues logging into the host so I can’t try the phpMyAdmin way to try and reset the wp plugins page but, one thing at a time. Is there a way to fix this (stop this plugin, and restore the wp-plugins page) through the plugin editor page? Site still runs and I can go to all the pages, sections, settings, and access everything, except the wp plugins page and beyond the update screen of this plugin.

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

    Hi there,

Thanks for getting in touch about this.

We haven’t seen an error that would affect the Plugins menu. If Independent Analytics is deactivated and the Plugins menu is inaccessible, then there must be something else going on.

If you can access your site’s files via your hosting account, a good first step would be to rename the “plugins” folder to something else like “plugins-temp”. Then you’ll be able to visit the Plugins menu and you’ll see zero plugins installed. Then change the folder name back to “plugins,” and when you visit the Plugins menu, the plugins will all be back but deactivated. Then, you can re-activate all of them except for Independent Analytics and make sure everything is running smoothly again.

In order to find out why Independent Analytics isn’t able to update, we’ll need to get an error message. You can install the WP Debugging plugin and visit the Analytics menu to trigger the error. Then if you can share the “fatal error” here, that would allow me to find out why the update isn’t completing.

Also, could you let me know what your web host is? We can try testing our plugin with them.

Okay, I think maybe the plugin page being broken was a host error (Network Solutions). I logged into the wp-admin backend this morning and I can get into the plugins page. So I deactivated the Independent Analytics plugin, deleted it, installed and activated the debugger plugin, and then reinstalled and reactivated the IA plugin. It’s still stuck on that update page, no messages in the debugger plugin.

I don’t know if any of this is helpful information to help figure out what’s happening, but here they are:

Thanks for all the feedback on this.

Are you able to access phpMyAdmin now? Since the debugger didn’t return an issue, there is another way we can get the needed info from the database.

In phpMyAdmin, you can click on the wp_options table and then search for all the rows that begin with “iawp,” like this: screenshot. If you could let me know the values of these four rows, that would be very helpful:

    • iawp_db_version
    • iawp_last_finished_migration_step
    • iawp_migration_error
    • iawp_migration_error_query

If any of those are missing that’s okay, just let me know.

Hi Ben, nope, not seeing anything there either ??

    Update:
I uninstalled it again, deactivated all but core plugins and debugger plugins, purged the debugger logs, then reinstalled and activated it and these are in the logs:

Thanks for your work on this.

There’s one error with the DB search: the % symbol should go at the end, like this: iawp%

The iawp_db_version record will let us know how far the plugin got through the installation process, and then we can try restarting it from the point of failure. It may work the second time through, or it will trigger an error, and then the debugger will catch that for error and we’ll have a much clearer idea of what’s happening.

Oh my bad! Here are the results of the updated query: https://paste.pics/QD1DK

I’ve actually uninstalled and removed the plugin through the wp plugins page, but I still wanna try and make this work. What are my next steps? Should I delete the rows from the results first and then reinstall and reactivate the plugin?

    Thank you! That’s very helpful.

Please try changing the iawp_is_migrating option from 1 to 0. Then revisit the Analytics menu, and hopefully, the full dashboard will load. It could take up to 5-10 seconds to load on the first visit.

If that doesn’t work, try changing iawp_db_version to 17, and then afterwards, change iawp_is_migrating to 0 again (it will be 1).

I’m pretty confident that one of these solutions will work, but I will figure out the next steps if this doesn’t help.

    Hi Ben,

At first it didn’t work after I changed iawp_is_migrating to 0, but then I noticed I didn’t activate the plugin yet lol. After activating, it set it back to 1, I waited about 5 minutes, it was still at the migration page, so I switched the row value back to 0 and I can see the dashboard now. Thanks for all the help, can’t wait to see what this thing does!

Awesome! I’m really glad to hear that worked, and thanks for sticking with me through the whole debugging process.

If you need anything else, let me know, and I’ll be happy to help.

I have this also. It said max 5 minutes, but after an hour or so, I stopped it by removing the plugin. I re-installed it, a few times by now, but every-time it’s stuck at ‘updating’… forever.
