• Hello, I’m stuck in an update loop with my site, lasnark.com. I always stay up to date on themes, but upgrading to 3.7.1 has me trapped.

Going to lasnark.com/wp-admin leads me to a page that says

    Database Update Required

WordPress has been updated! Before we send you on your way, we have to update your database to the newest version.

The update process may take a little while, so please be patient.

I receive a message saying that the update has been completed, but I’m still not able to access the admin area.

I’ve tried the suggestions I’ve found in other threads, but nothing has worked. The site is viewable on the web, but I can’t get into the admin area.

I’ve resinstalled a fresh WordPress (not wp-content or config) but I’m still trapped in the loop. I also tried to rename the plugins folder while updating, but that didn’t work either.

Would love some tips if anyone has any suggestions.

  • Try:
    – switching to the default theme by renaming your current theme’s folder inside wp-content/themes and adding “-old” to the end of the folder name using FTP or whatever file management application your host provides.

resetting the plugins folder by FTP or phpMyAdmin.

    – re-uploading all files & folders – except the wp-content folder and the wp-config.php & root .htaccess files – from a fresh download of WordPress. Make sure that you delete the old copies of files & folder before uploading the new ones.

    – running the upgrade manually via wp-admin/upgrade.php

Thanks esmi, I tried all of those when I saw those instructions pasted into another thread. The fresh WordPress that I just downloaded had TwentyThirteen and TwentyTwelve in it, would one of those be the default?

I renamed my installed TwentyThirteen theme with the “-old” but nothing seemed to change.

Also I’m not sure how to access phpMyAdmin

    Thanks

Twenty Thirteen is the current default theme.

Okay, well I guess that didn’t work then. I have Hostgator looking into it on their end now. Hopefully that helps.

I renamed my installed TwentyThirteen theme with the “-old” but nothing seemed to change.

No. You are supposed to rename your current theme’s folder – not the twwentythirteen folder.

Then remove -old from the theme’s folder name.

Okay, well now I’m back where I started.

Try checking your site’s error logs for a more specific error message. Your hosts should be able to help you accessing your site’s error logs.

    Okay, thanks
