• For a few weeks I’ve had a blog at WP.com. This past week I decided to move the blog to WP.org and have it hosted by LaughingSquid. I had a WP volunteer install WP for me and I thought I was then ready to roll.

After a few test posts I discovered that I could not upload (my desktop) images into my posts. I keep getting the following notice:

Unable to create directory /var/www/vhosts/mypersonalblogname.com/httpdocs/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2007/01. Is its parent directory writable by the server?

I have NO idea what the above message means. I plowed through scores of pages of forum support, the FAQ, and even asked my Saint Bernard. No luck!

Can someone help? Please keep the techno-jargon to a minimum since I’m an obvious dimwit. I’m strictly a MAC user (OSX), using the standard 1-button mouse, using Firefox 2.0 browser. And I’ve not done anything more complicated HTML-wise than a few simple eBay listings.

  • This has to do with your wp-content folder. The 1st time you use it for image uploading you must CHMOD the folder to 777. After the 1st time you are supposed to be able to CHMOD back to 755 and all work well. Try it – if that doesn’t work you’ll have to leave it at 777 for auto uploading. Stinks for security, however.

Thanks for your reply but I don’t know where my wp-content folder is located. Do I find this somewhere in the WP Administration Panel?

Sorry, but when it comes to this stuff I’m about as bright as Paris Hilton in a spelling bee.

OK – you can access it via your ftp program (like Filezilla) or through your host’s control panel under the file manager. Look for something like “permissions” beside the folder name.
