Style first post, seperate style for older

    I’m trying to set up my theme so that the first post is styled and feature prominently on top of my content area, while my older posts are displayed with a new style (and in a separate column below). Here’s a link to a mock-up of what I’m talking about.

    The latest post is on top, the older in the left column, add’l content on the right.

    I have checked out several topics on this, but I just can’t seem to get it right. Any help would be much appreciated.
