Styling a Custom Menu?

Hi,
I’m working with the “Admired Child” theme (based off Admired obviously). I’m trying to use the editor and my web developer plugin on Chrome to re-style my custom menu on the side.

I have no idea what I’m doing wrong, but nothing is working.
Tried using .menu li, .menu ul, etc. to change it, but that doesn’t seem to do anything.

Its been a long week and I’m tired, so I could be missing the obvious.

Here’s a screenshot how it currently looks (https://i48.tinypic.com/2dgnsea.png)–I’d like to get rid of the list-like look and possibly get it to look similar to the top bar navigation (and if its possible to do a pop-out menu for the links under the main heads in that list, that’d be super.)
