styling field labels

Hello,
I’m trying to apply a css class to the field label separately from the field value; for example, using a span to display text like this: “Name: George”
How can I edit my template to apply a style just to the field label? I’m using the default template.
Secondly, it’s outputting Name : George, with an extra space. How can I delete that? You can see it here:
