Styling widget to show events horizontally

I use a theme with an optional horizontal widget area. How do I get the Events in the widget to display horizontally?

I tried

#em_widget-7 .widget ul li {float:left !important;}
and
#em_widget-7 .widget ul li {display:inline}

but it doesn’t seem to work. Any tips on how to do it? I’m an amateur, but know some CSS.
