sub-domain or sub-directory

    Okay, After trawling through as many of the posts as I could and still couldn’t find the help I need, I have to add a new topic.

    I want to create and “umbrella” (eg. https://www.mynewsite.com) site/blog using the WP MS, and will install this in the root of the site, I have read and watched as many tutorials as possible and should be all good to install MS.

    The next question is sub-domain or sub-directory?
    It seems easier to create sub directories over sub-domains but what is the real difference.
    As I understand it, when and if I create sub-directories the URL becomes https://www.mynewsite.com/new_folder?
    Can I then purchase a new domain and point it to the sub-directory?
    and then each sub-directory will be a separate site, but controlled through a single install of WP MS.
    Have I got this right?
    Or maybe the sub-domain is the way forward?

    If you’re mapping full domains, it does not matter. Just pick whatever works on your server.

    you need wildcard subdomains to use subdomains, so ask your host about that first.

    Thanks guys for your prompt help.
    I think I’m going to go with the sub directory also get the plugin as per Tim’s advice..
    When the purchased domains are mapped to my subdirectories , how effective is the SEO etc and will the domain name be visible in the address bar, or will it show it as it’s actual location in the sub-directory?

    There’s options in the plugin to have the domain name be the PRIMARY address.

    The original subfolder may be visible in the html source. Google still thinks it is an actual domain. It works the exact same way domain mapping does on wordpress.COM blogs.
