Subsites within one domain

I’m building a website with a homepage of example.com, and on the homepage, there would be links to subsite1, and subsite2. When you click into the subsite1 section, the URL would be example.com/subsite1. This entire section would have the subsite1 logo, subsite1 art, and a menu specific to the subsite1 section. The same would be true for the subsite2 section, with different art, and different menu items. Some of the menu items might be the same for the two sections, like the Contact page, and other menu items, such as About, might have the same menu title, but different text for the different sections.

Is this possible to do? Would you need to have different WordPress logins to edit the different sections (Homepage, subsite1 section, subsite2 section)? I’m wondering how difficult it would be to maintain, especially when I hand it off to someone with no WordPress experience at all.
