Subdomain Set up

    I have a video site and would like to set up a subdomain linked to my site for editorials, etc.The template for the subdomain will need to be different.

    I have already set up the subdomain in my control panel. However, now I am stuck. I noticed that I a new folder has been created in my public html.

    1) How do I go about setting up the subdomain with it’s own template
    2) How do I link it back to my video site? Do I create a page with a link to the subdomain?

    Subdomains ALWAYS create a new folder – that is how they work.

    As far as WP is concerned, a subdomain is going to be seen as if it was a separate domain altogether. That is, if you are going to use a subdomain you are going to have to do it as a second WP installation/site. Thus you will link to it the same way you would link to any external website. Even though its on the same domain, the subdomain makes it effectively the same as an external website

    Thanks for that. That is my problem … I am a rookie in this field. So I created my subdomain in my cpanel …. and I can see the new folder in my public folder.
    But now I am stuck. I don’t know how to go about and do the second WP installation ….

    If you have Fantastico available in your cPanel installation you can easily install another WP installation like this: (you’ve already done step 1)

    To install wordpress in a subdomain just follow the following steps.

    1. Create a subdomain in the cPanel, lets suppose it to be “blog.mysite . com”
    2. Goto Fantastico and select WordPress from the available list of Packages available under “Blogs section”.
    3. Click on “New Installation”
    4. In the “Install on domain” option you’ll find a list of available domains and subdomains, select the one where you want to install the WordPress. Here in our case, “blog.mysite . com”
    5. Next Complete the required information and your Worpress will be installed in the subdomain automatically by Fantastico.
    6. Pre-check all the info before hitting the submit button.
    7. after completion you can view the WordPress blog at “blog.mysite . com”

    I did as per above. Made sure I selected my blog.mysite.com. I tried to view my original site and now I get an “Error establishing a database connection” ….
    Could it be because I used the same username and password? Just wanted to keep it consistent ….. arghhh. Deleted the subdomain etc but no change.

    The password / username you selected relate to WordPress, not to the database. They should have nothing to do with the problem.

    – go into the wp-config.php file IN YOUR ORIGINAL SITE’S folder

    – double check the database,username, password, host

    – if they are all still the same, go into Cpanel MySQL. You should see two databases. Make sure the original
     database still exists and that the database user from wp-config.php is still associated with the original database.

    ok, checked it and it is all ok. Maybe the server is just down. Finges crossed.

    check with your webhost also. what you did should not have caused the first WP to lose its db connection
