I use Subscribe2 plugin v6.5 with WordPress 3.2.1 ( will upgrade soon to 3.3). I am starting to get lots of spam comments and a few of what I suspect are spam subscribers, who I think then hit me with spam every time they are advised of a new post. I wanted to ask a few questions please:

    1. Is it likely that spam subscribers would increase spam comments?

    2. On my “manage subscribers” page, there are a few things I cannot understand:

    • It lists Public subscribers, Registered users and Registered subscribers. I understand a subscriber has asked for email notifications, but what is a Registered user? And I guess a Registered subscriber is both??
    • There are also some little icons in the subscribers list (green tick, green R and red exclamation mark) – what do these mean?
    • Some of the users and subscribers have boxes to allow deletion of email address, but the ones with the Green R do not. If I think these are spam, how do I remove them?
    • Is there anywhere where all this is explained – I couldn’t find it?

    Thanks.

  • @unklee,

    In answer to your questions:

1/ Possibly. If you have WordPress set so that only Registered users can comment and that these users comments are automatically approved it may result in more spam. Review your settings and make sure you are running anti-spam measures. That said is may simply be down to increased popularity of your site so it becomes a more valuable spam target.

2/ This article may help you understand the user types better. Public Subscribers are not Registered in WordPress. Registered Users is a list of all WordPress registered users while Registered Subscribers and those list under your category headings are those registered users with an active subscription.

Thanks MattyRob, but even after reading that article, I still don’t understand what a registered user is. I must be dumb, but:

    • I know how people subscribe (Subscribe2 puts a widget in my blog’s sidebar), and I see them listed in my Tools: Manage Subscribers page,
    • and I see users listed under the User tab, but I don’t know how people register as users.

Can you or someone else clarify this for me please? (Sorry, but I’ve searched and searched and everything I’ve read seems to assume I understand these basics.)

I think I get it. Are users simply anyone who makes a comment? In which case they cannot be deleted.

    @unklee,

In the General screen there is an option that enables User Registrations. This adds an additional option to the login screen whereby visitors to your site can Register. They will then show up in the Users screen and they will have a log in to the admin area – usually as a Subscriber level user.

Such users get additional control over their subscriptions in Subscribe2 compared to someone who uses the form or widget to provide their email address alone.

Registered users can be deleted but from the WordPress menu at Users->All Users.

It will depend on your site settings if these users are commenters or not, you may have a setting enabled in WordPress that requires anyone making a comment to register first.

Thanks for taking the trouble. These things are all basic but I just couldn’t quite get them clear in my head.
