    Hello everyone,

we setup our blog to show the full articles on our RSS-Feed for users who use a RSS-Reader and set the more-tag on all our articles so the subscriber emails only contain the a short introduction of the article.
As of recently (28.07.2020 around 16:00 CET) this is no longer working.
Now the emails contain the full article despite setting a “read more”-tag.

Do subscriber emails no longer support or ignore the more-tag of the “classic editor”?

If so – is there a way to circumvent this issue?

    Thank you in advance.

In case it’s helpful, it began in the morning of July 28th for us, and our first two posts that day were fine (truncated the email at the more tag as expected), but the third onwards wasn’t.

We hadn’t updated anything, as we never do in the daytime. So it seems this bug isn’t in the plugin, but rather in the Jetpack codebase at the developers end.

Hope this might be helpful in getting a fix sooner than later, we’ve lost around 4,000 pageviews a week because of this, but can’t change the feeds to extracts to fix the emails, as we use the feed in other ways.

As mentioned, we’re still working on this.

I’ve been having this issue on a daily basis for 3 weeks now. I had en email at the end of last week that Jetpack had been updated, but no fix. I’m also keeping tabs here in the hope of updates, but again, no dice.

Is there a timeline for this fix? It’s cut my page traffic in half, and I’m worried that my email subscribers are now in the habit of reading whole posts in their inboxes. Would really like to get back on track, as I’m sure we all would!

For now until there’s a “read-more” fix, you can set your feeds to summary instead of full text.

Go to Settings -> Reading and find the option, “For each post in a feed, include…”

Change that option from “Full text” to “Summary.”

That will cause emails to include the first few sentences of a post, typically cut off mid-sentence somewhere. It will also not include post images any more.

Not ideal, and not controllable per-post as before with the “read-more” tag, but at least this directs more traffic to your site until there’s a fix for this issue.

Thanks @ahcj – I had originally opted out of doing that because my subscribers seem more motivated to click through if there’s a photo involved…
But seeing as this is now a long-term issue, I might have to do that :/

Any updates from the plugin team?

    Hi all,

We have someone currently working on a fix for this. No estimate yet on when it will be working, so for now using the Summary option in feed settings is the only workaround if you don’t want full posts to go out via email.

So good to find this thread. Same problem here — emails went out with full post when I want people to be driven to the blog site to “read more”. And it’s worrying that there’s still no fix from Jetpack after all this time.

At least I know not to change to “summary” now — an arbitrary cut-off and no image!

Jetpack, is there an update from your end?

    Hi all,

This issue was fixed a few hours ago. I just tested it on my own site, and the more block is now truncating new post notification emails as expected.

    Hello everyone,
I just checked and as KokkieH mentioned the issue is resolved on our side.
Thank you all for your efforts.

So all we need to do is update the Jetpack plug-in?

@jenpen25 this is something that was broken on WordPress.com’s end, where the emails are generated, so not directly related to the Jetpack plugin itself. It has been fixed over on WordPress.com, so it should work again for everyone.

That said, if you haven’t updated to Jetpack 8.9 that came out this week yet, please make sure you do that ??

    Thank you @kokkieh & co ??

Has anyone (other than tech) tried this fix and if so did it include photo?

Have changed back to full text feeds and it truncates correctly, but it isn’t including the images like it used to.

Why is this marked as ‘Resolved”?

As Steve Evans says, it’s truncating correctly, but no sign of the featured image in the email.

I’ll start a new topic because marking something as ‘Resolved’ probably means it won’t get any attention.
