Subscribers Notification List

I have a wordpress blog that I’m using with Comicpress to do a webcomic.

I’ve decided I want people to ‘subscribe’ in order to post comments, which isn’t a problem. However, I’ve been hunting around for a ‘notification’ feature which will allow subscribers to check a box on their account page so that they can be notified when new posts are published.

I’ve tried the Email Notification Plugin 2.3.1, but I can’t figure out how to modify it to do what I want it to. Is there another plugin out there that does this for WordPress 2+? Can anyone point me in the right direction?

What I really want it do do is just add a checkbox to their account page which they can check or uncheck to recieve updates. And it would be nice if there was a way to make additions to the accounts page so that users could communicate directly with the admin for future contests – but that’s just a nice to have that I’m not worried about right now.
