I have been happily blogging away for about 6 months gradually learning the program and gradually increasing my subscriber base. So far so good. Today I discovered, when I registered myself as a new user to test something, that all my subscribers have access to the site.

After scrounging around I found out about “level 0” and the plugin Profile Only. I then discovered various plugins that all seemed to address part of the problem. Register Plus made the login and registration much nicer but still dumps the newly logged in at the dashboard. Profile only is supposed to solve the problem but it didn’t by itself and after Role Scoper it now causes them to get an error message. Role Scoper solved my security problem but I think its what creates the error message:
You do not have sufficient permissions to access this page.

I can’t believe this is that hard. I thought okay I’ll create a “My Account” area but I’m not skilled enough yet for Dashboard Management. I just want folks to read what they want and to register if they want to comment.

    awarmblanket.com if that helps!!

    Thanks in advance

Define “access to the site”, exactly. Because default subscriber roles don’t have access to the important bits. Their profile, of course, but for the most part they lack the necessary capabilities to do anything of real value.

Users have access to the dashboard, yes. That’s sort of the whole point of having users. If you want it to dump them to the site when they login, then give them a different login link, one with ?redirect_to=https://example.com appended to it. Then they will login and get redirected to there.

You can also use a login widget to let them login directly to the sidebar: https://blue-anvil.com/archives/wordpress-sidebar-login-2-optimised-for-wordpress-26

Well, to tell the truth, I only saw the dashboard come up and sort of panicked cuz it looked like my admin dashboard. I suspect, now, it only had the profile menu item on it.

Where does the login link go?

    Thanks

Thank you, I found the login function and found another function “function jw_loginorpost()” by a guy named jeff white that did the trick. So I’m a happy camper. Thanks jeff!
