When I register from outside the site, it does not give me the option of a new blog or just a username, so subsites are not being set up. I am using the Sitewide Tags plugin, and that separate site was set up, but I am unable to access it. When I try to get to it from the site panel, I am redirected to the dashboard of the main site, and when I try to access it through the URL, I am taken to the front page of the main site.

    Thanks

  • What’s the link to your site?
What format did you pick, subdomains or subfolders?
Can you create a new site from Super Admin -> Sites -> Add New?

Sounds like either your hosting service has not got the vhosts file set up with a wildcard for subdomains, or they have disabled it – squirt them a support ticket to check, because if either of those are true, doesn’t matter what you do, you ain’t gonna get subdomain sub-blogs running.

In the SuperAdmin sites list, it is possible to setup a new site, and to have wildcard subdomains in DNS, but if the Apache server httpd.conf and/or vhosts.conf is not set up, you ain’t ever gonna see those additional sites you create in SuperAdmin.

    Symptoms of that include –

    • Not being offered ability to add site when registering as new user
    • viewing sub-site or backend from in home site admin dumps you at main site home page
    • In DNS manager – having to hack in an A record with IP address to set up your wild card domain, instead of just being allowed to add a * subdomain name in the add subdomain panel

Go on – ask me how I know those things – I found out the hard way on a long and twisted path to insanity ??

    Hi Andrea,

    The link is https://tastethenightlife.com

I’m told it is set up with subdomains.

Yes, I can create a new site from Super Admin, and it seems to work.

    Thanks!

I need to correct myself. It was set up with subfolders. Thanks

Whatever you’re using on the Register page you’ve linked to, it’s only for adding users.

    https://tastethenightlife.com/wp-signup.php is the right spot.

Hi Andrea, I’ve gotten the registration issue fixed – thank you for pointing me in the right direction. I”m still having the same problem with the Sitewide Tags plugin. I tried deleting it and reinstalling it, but nothing changed.

“I am using the Sitewide Tags plugin, and that separate site was set up, but I am unable to access it. When I try to get to it from the site panel, I am redirected to the dashboard of the main site, and when I try to access it through the URL, I am taken to the front page of the main site.”

    Thanks!

    – where’s the tags blog? (I need the url to it)
    – did you assign the tags blog as the Dashboard blog under Super Admin -> Options?

The problem is no one can get to the tags blog. Under Super Admin – options, I assigned the posts to the tags blog rather than the main site. The Dashboard site is left blank.

The URL should be https://tastethenightlife.com/allposts. I’ve used this before with no problem.

    Thanks

I see a copy of the main blog’s landing page.

That’s the problem. The tags site defaults to this. If I try from inside the super admin panel, I get the main blog’s dashboard.

The URL should be https://tastethenightlife.com/allposts. I’ve used this before with no problem.

So… .this /allposts/ blog existed before you added the tags blog?

Re-do it and let it make the /tags/ blog itself.

    (@anitaea)

No, sorry. I used it on another incarnation of this blog with no problem. I did let it set it up itself. I’ve even deleted it and started back from scratch with all plugins disabled. The only difference between the previous blogsite and this one is that we changed from virtualmin to c-panel for the server.

and that wouldn’t be it either. :-/

And if you change the theme on the tags blog back to the default? what happens then?

    Thread Starter anitaea

    (@anitaea)

I can’t do anything to the tags blog. I’ve never been able to access it. I can see it on the “sites” list, but If I try to access it from inside the super admin panel, I get the main blog’s dashboard.

On the sites list, you can Edit the site and change the theme if you know what theme folder name & stylesheet to type in. ??

No idea why it’s redirecting you out.
