Subtraction.com style category display

I’d like to display my categories in a list similar in style to the on Subtraction.com however I can’t work out how to do it.

I have them displayed inline but when I tell the .categories li element to have spacing it has no effect. How can I achieve a similar look? It’s driving me nuts!!
