Suddenly gallery showing only one image front end

I’ve been using Nextcellent v 1.9.31 due to the well-documented problems with 1.9.32, and it’s been working fine until now. Now, it will only show one image thumbnail instead of the whole gallery. Also, none of the lightboxes work, and a very strange thing: the rest of the page content has disappeared. All the text, etc! It comes back if I take out the gallery, i.e. remove [nggallery id=1].

This is on a site with PHP updated to 7.1, which may have something to do with it.

I’ve tried deleting the plugin and reinstalling, deactivating plugins, theme, etc, no change. I’m aware of the fixes needed for the back end noted in other threads, I’ve done that.

Anyone else run into this? I’d switch to NextGen, but I can’t find a lightbox I like that will work with it, without paying for one. I can’t get any kind of touch swipe effect to work with them. I like that Nextcellent works (or did) with PhotoSwipe.
