Hey there, great plugin! I’m including it in a post at sellwithwp.com next week.

Just a minor usability suggestion: When adding a free shipping method, there’s no way to get back to the “Settings > Advanced Free Shipping” page. Would be very handy to have a link back to settings on the page where you create a free shipping method.

Also, might be handy to leverage the cart weight rather than simply a product weight to give free shipping to light orders. Not sure if you’re planning to build a pro version and include some of these things, but just a couple considerations :).

    Thanks!

    Hi Beka,

Thanks for including a post to sellwithwp.com!!

I’m working on an update with customized user notices when a method saves. I’m including a link back to the main page in that notice. I noticed this too a couple of days ago, thanks for reminding me to get that done soon ??

The weight is actually calculated on the total cart weight, I filed it under products since it is a product attribute. Now you mention it might be better under the ‘Cart’ section, but I’m not 100% convinced about that since it is a product attribute.

What do you think? (and others?)

    Thanks!

Hey Jeroen, thanks for the quick response! The article I was referring to posts on Monday if you’d like to check it out.

Interesting that the total cart weight was used. Now that you mention it, I don’t think I actually tested this by refreshing the cart to see if increased weight changed it :).

For me, I’d prefer to see it under “Cart” with a notice when “Cart > Weight” is selected to let me know that it will add up the individual product weights. Agreed that it’s a product attribute, but my thought as I was testing this was that I don’t want to base free shipping just on the “product”, but rather on the weight of the order as a whole. If I were to select a Cart > Weight, I’d assume it was adding up the weight of all products in the cart. Product > Weight actually doesn’t send the same message to me.

Just my thought…would love to hear from someone else if they come across this thread!

    Hi Beka,

Lets hope someone comes across and let their opinion know.

Whats your take on the other conditions (like width/length/height which are based on the widest/highest products)?

    Thanks!

    Hey Jeroen,

I actually wasn’t too sure about those since you may be more familiar with the use case there.

For example, let’s say I’ll give free shipping using the product rule for anything with Length < 12in, Height < 4in, Width < 4in. If I have an item that measures L=10in, H=3in, W=3in, then it meets these criteria and I’ll get free shipping. However, I still get free shipping even if I order 12 of them, which will change the parcel / box size used to ship the item.

With that in mind, it seems like L, W, H fit best under “product” since it only considers the size of one product (the biggest) and not the combined size of what’s in the cart (as I don’t think this is possible / relevant really since it depends on how things are packed). I guess someone would probably then couple this with a “quantity” rule to consider parcel size as best as they could.

So tl;dr they seem to fit best where they are currently to me :).
